The Rankings are updated to include the last week of the regular season. By virtue of LSU’s SEC Championship victory over Tennessee and WVU’s humiliating upset loss to Pitt, Les Miles leaps over Rich Rodriguez into the top spot. Check out where your coach landed.

USA Today Stole Our Idea!!!

USA Today, in today’s print and online editions, has a big story about coaches’ salaries, and includes a ranking of coaches based on dollars per win. Sound familiar? We already did it. To be fair, we only published our preview. Well that’s all changed now, because I just posted our rankings of all 120 1A coaches by dollars per win.

There are a couple of things wrong with USA Today’s list. First, they don’t have the salaries of all the coaches. I’m not sure what’s wrong with their research staff, but we have all 120 of them. Second, they seem to only have the coaches’ base salaries in some cases (hence Charlie Weiss being listed at $673,779 instead of $3.5 million). This really throws off the results.

Preview of Rankings: Dollars Per Win

We’re furiously working to get our unbiased coach rankings done, but here’s a bit of a preview for you. We run across a lot of interesting tidbits while we’re compiling the rankings. For example, which coaches are a good value for their university and which are wasting the most money? To figure that out we take the coach’s salary and divide it by the team’s wins on the year. This gives us the Dollars Per Win, which roughly tells us how much value a coach brings to their job.

So without further ado, here are the best values in coaching (through week 10):
