Overpaid? The Lowest Paid Coach Beats the Highest Paid Coach
November 19, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Folks, you just can’t make this stuff up…
Alabama coach Nick Saban makes over $3.5 million per year. Louisiana-Monroe coach Charlie Weatherbie makes $130,000. By my calculations that means Saban makes nearly 27 times what Weatherbie does. On top of that Saban’s Crimson Tide made the university over $61 million last year, and Weatherbie’s Warhawks brough in just over $2 million. Put these facts together and it’s absolutely flabbergasting that Weatherbie’s squad actually beat Saban’s on Saturday.
Also, in case you’re counting, Bama’s loss means that Saban is 0-2 against the state of Louisiana this year. If you don’t know why that’s significant you haven’t been following his career. He left LSU for the Miami Dolphins on Christmas Day in 2004. Then, despite denying rumors that he was interested in the job, Saban bolted the Dolphins after only two years. And he didn’t just come back to college. He came back to a bitter SEC rival. So LSU fans are a wee bit upset with him.
How upset? When I visited Baton Rouge in September there were already people wearing shirts with his face on the front and “Beat Satan” on the back. These people know how to hold a grudge…
Also, Alabama’s loss coupled with Notre Dame’s win means that Saban is giving Charlie Weiss a run for his money for “Most Overpaid Coach in College Football”. Saban still has a chance to redeem himself though. A win over Auburn in this Saturday’s Iron Bowl will go a long way towards making Tide fans forget all about Saban’s blunder.
