Coach Fran Buyout Talks Heating Up
November 6, 2007 |
Texas A&M officials are still denying it, but several reports say that the team is in final negotiations with coach Dennis Franchione to buy out his contract and send him packing. A&M is reportedly offering Coach Fran $1.9 million to walk away.
So who will replace Coach Fran if he does accept a buyout? There’s speculation that it will be Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville. Tuberville was A&M’s defensive coordinator in 1994, so he’s got an idea what coaching in College Station would be like. Of course Tommy is refusing to say anything about any other schools until after the season. My bet is that Alabama fans are rooting for Tuberville to get the job for two reasons. First, Coach Fran shafted Alabama when he left there for A&M, so Tommy doing the same to Auburn would be mighty sweet to Bama fans. Second, Tommy is 6-2 in the Iron Bowl, and that doesn’t sit too well with the Crimson Tide.

I think Tuberville has a better chance of success by staying at Auburn than taking over a program that is clearly in turmoil.
That may be, but it’s funny how cash can change that perception
Auburn pays Tuberville more than A&M pays Franny
Something tells me that A&M might just offer a little more than he’s making now. From what I’ve read their boosters aren’t afraid to give money for something they think will help them win.
