Bower Done at Southern Miss
November 26, 2007 |
Southern Mississippi coach Jeff Bower resigned today after 17 seasons with the Golden Eagles. Bower’s resignation comes after his 14th consecutive winning season with Southern Miss, though one where they fell short of their goal of a CUSA title. The team has been invited to the Papajohns.com Bowl, their 10th bowl invitation in 11 years. His stretch of winning seasons trails only Florida State (with 31), Michigan (with 23), Florida (with 20) and Virginia Tech (with 15).
It doesn’t seem like resigning was Bower’s idea. He had a meeting with athletic director Richard Giannini, then held a press conference announcing his retirement. During the press conference he said “I want you to know there’s a lot of fight left in Jeff Bower, and I am not done yet”. Hmm. That doesn’t sound like a guy who was ready to just willingly hang it up to me.
Bower becomes our highest-ranked coach fired so far, coming in at #21 with 228.81.
