Alabama football coach Nick Saban
College football’s highest paid coach just can’t resist getting himself in trouble. In a Monday press conference Alabama’s Nick Saban said:

“Changes in history usually occur after some kind of catastrophic event. It may be 9/11, which sort of changed the spirit of America relative to catastrophic events. Pearl Harbor kind of got us ready for World War II, and that was a catastrophic event. And I don’t think anyone in this room would have bet that we would lose back to back games to Mississippi State or ULM.”

I was stuck in traffic today for several hours, and spent much of it listening to various radio personalities criticizing Saban for comparing losing to ULM to Pearl Harbor or 9/11. And I would not have a problem with their criticism with their criticism if that’s what he actually said. But he didn’t.

Saban didn’t actually compare his team’s struggles to these tragic events. He simply made the point that bad things can lead to changes, which lead to positive outcomes. So leave him alone. If you want to criticize him for something, do it for his team’s performance or his overwhelming salary, or his inability to do what he says he will do.
